In order to prevent and control water contamination, China has formulated many policies and laws, such as the Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law of the People's Republic of China, which is designed to prevent and control water contamination, protect and improve the environment, ensure drinking water safety, and promote the comprehensive, coordinated and 
sustainable development of the economy and society. It is applicable to the pollution control of surface water bodies and underground water bodies such as rivers, lakes, canals, channels and reservoirs in the territory of the People's Republic of China.
Article 3 of the General Provisions of the Law stipulates that the prevention and control of water pollution shall adhere to the principle of prevention first, combination of prevention and control and comprehensive treatment, give priority to the protection of drinking water sources, strictly control industrial pollution and urban pollution, prevent and control agricultural non-point source pollution, actively promote the construction of ecological treatment projects, prevent, control and reduce water environmental pollution and ecological damage. The policy explains in detail how to prevent and control water pollution, strictly control industrial pollution and urban pollution through laws and regulations, reduce ecological damage, and adhere to sustainable development strategies; it has a certain effect on the prevention and control of water pollution, such as the environment is protected and improved, drinking water safety is guaranteed to a certain extent, and it also promotes the comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development of the economy and society.
