Hayao Miyazaki s’est ouvert en grand et dans une lettre d’amour au cinéma et à l’animation, il a voulu montrer au monde son histoire sous la forme d’un beau film du Studio Ghibli intitulé Le garçon et le héron. Un film avec lequel le réalisateur s’est complètement renouvelé et qu’il doit laisser passer dans son esprit pour pouvoir se concentrer sur son prochain projet.
C’est ce qu’a expliqué le cofondateur du Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzuki, qui a expliqué les nombreuses difficultés auxquelles Hayao Miyazaki a dû faire face au cours des sept années qu’a duré la réalisation de cette grande œuvre cinématographique. « Pour l’instant, Miyazaki ne peut pas penser à de nouvelles idées tant que Le garçon et le héron est en salles », a déclaré Toshio Suzuki lors d’une interview pour le site Indiewire.

En fait, l’histoire devait se concentrer sur la relation entre l’oncle et le garçon mais après la mort d’Isao Takahata, Miayazaki a modifié l’histoire pour que le héron prenne le devant de la scène. « Après la mort de Takahata, il ne pouvait pas continuer cette histoire, alors il a changé la narration et l’histoire est devenue la relation entre le garçon et le héron », explique Suzuki dans l’interview.
